Oriental Medicine stimulates the body's natural ability to heal itself.

Understanding Traditional Chinese Medicine

How does Oriental Medicine Work?

It has been scientifically determined that human beings are actually unique bio-energetic systems.  For thousands of years Oriental Medicine has acknowledged that there is a vital life force that flows through all things.  THis force is called Qi (pronounced chee) and in the est is often referred to as "energy".  Qi flows along pathways in the human body, called meridians, each of which is related to the organs and tendomuscular system.  When the balance of this energy is disturbed, either due to trauma, poor diet, medications, stress, hereditary factors, environment, or extreme emotional issues, pain or disease results.  Oriental Medicine focuses on correcting these energetic imbalances by breaking up any obstruction and encouraging the smooth, even flow of Qi, which then stimulates the body's natural ability to heal itself.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a medical modality that has been used to diagnose, treat and prevent illness for over 2000 years. Acupuncture can remedy acute or chronic ailments, relieve pain, enhance recuperative powers, and strengthen the immune system. In an Oriental Medicine assessment your practitioner will diagnose, or differentiate, your condition with a thorough examination which will include an interpretation through medical history, pulse, and tongue diagnosis. Your practitioner may also use the following adjunct techniques within your session: Moxabustion (heat), Gua Sha (scraping), Cupping (suction), auricular therapy (ear acupuncture), electrical or laser stimulation, or even manual manipulation of the points. There are many different styles of acupuncture including: CHinese, Japanese, Korean and Tibetan.

What is a Treatment Like?

Extremely fine, hair thin, flexible needles are placed at specific points on the energetic pathways, the meridians. When the needles are inserted you may experience a sensation of tingling or warmth. People are surprised to find that treatments are quite relaxing. The length and frequency of a treatment may vary for each individual and will be determined by your Acupuncturist of Doctor of Oriental Medicine.  Acupuncture treatments are scheduled according to the nature of your condition.  As you improve, fewer visits are required.  Discuss your treatment plan with your acupuncturist, since each individual is different.

Oriental Herbology

Ancient CHinese herbal formulas are as effective now as they were when first introduced more than 2000 years ago.  Most formulas consist of two to eighteen different types of herbs.  Formulas treat a wide variety of symptoms while stimulating the body's natural healing process.  Hospital studies prescribing individualized complex herbal formulas have demonstrated excellent with patients who fail to respond to conventional pharmaceutical treatments.

How do I Take Oriental Herbs?

Modern techniques can transform formulas into pills, capsules, granules, or tinctures to make them easier and more convenient to ingest. Your practitioner may want you to prepare them as they did in ancient times, by boiling them and drinking herbal soup. Chinese Herbology is considered most safe and effective when prescribed by a qualifies practitioner of Oriental Medicine.

Certification & Licensing

THe regulation of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine is extremely strict in the state of California.  The California Acupuncture Board has established stringent standards to practice acupuncture and herbs safely and effectively.  THese standards are significantly higher than those at the national level.

Safety

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology are safe medical procedures and are well known for their efficacy and lack of side-effects when administered by a qualifies practitioner.  Most practitioners use pre-sterilized , disposable needles when administering an acupuncture treatment.  All practitioners licensed by the state of California comply with strict regulations for proper sterile needle technique.

Insurance Coverage

Many California insurance companies currently cover acupuncture treatments.  Checks with your insurance carrier to determine your coverage.  Organizations on the state and national levels are working to inform insurers and the public in order to standardize payment practices and accessibility to acupuncture and Oriental MEdicine.  For additional advice, ask your acupuncturist for suggestions regarding the issue.

Is It For You?

Oriental Medicine is used not only for pain management, but also as a comprehensive system of health care and health maintenance.  Athletes use Oriental Medicine to achieve optimum performance levels.  Cancer patients are treated for the side effects of chemotherapy to enhance their quality of life.  Detoxification treatments have proven to help those with chemical and/or substance dependency problems.
