Neuro-Anatomical Acupuncture Strategies

3 Units 30 hours
This course provides insight into and practical exercises in techniques based on neuroanatomy for treating complicated pain conditions. Trigger Point Treatments, Gunn's Approach to treatment of chronic pain, special techniques in meridian acupuncture, and special exercise regimens are covered.

Electroacupuncture & Auriculotherapy
3 Units 30 hours
This course teaches an expanded use of the application of various electrical detection and stimulation techniques used in the management of chronic pain. Knowledge of the fundamental features of electronic devices and the bioelectrical nature of the human body will be examined. Understanding of the differential features of electrical stimulation frequency and intensity parameters will be evaluated as they affect acupuncture treatments. Specific uses of electrical devices for acupoint localization and meridian treatment will be demonstrated. Special focus will be placed on the utilization of auricular electroacupuncture in both Chinese and European systems of treatment.

Neuropathic & Visceral Pain Disorders
3 Units 30 hours
This course examines the neurophysiological and clinical basis of neuropathic and visceral pain disorders and how clinical management of those conditions can be best achieved by the integration of Western and Oriental medicine procedures.

Musculoskeletal Pain 1: Head and Oro-facial Pain
3 Units 30 hours
This course covers a. Structure and functions of the head and oro-facial region, b. Diagnostic procedures including orthopedic exam, neurological tests, radiological and laboratory tests, c. Differential diagnosis, d. Treatment of pain of the head and oro-facial pain with the modalities of Oriental Medicine, including acupuncture, electroacupuncture and herbal medicine.

Musculoskeletal Pain 2: Cervical and Thoracic Spine and Upper Extremities
3 Units 30 hours
This course covers a. Structure and function of the thoracic spine and upper extremities, b. Diagnostic procedures including orthopedic exam, neurological tests, radiological and laboratory tests, c. Differential diagnosis, d. Treatment of disorders of the thoracic spine and upper extremities with the modalities of Oriental medicine, including acupuncture, electroacupuncture and herbal medicine.

Musculoskeletal Pain 3: Lumbar Spine, Pelvis and Lower Extremities
3 Units 30 hours
This course covers: a. Structure and function of the spine, pelvis and lower extremities, b. Diagnostic procedures including orthopedic exam, neurological tests, radiological and laboratory tests, c. Differential diagnosis, d. Treatment of disorders of the spine, pelvis and lower extremities with the modalities of Oriental medicine, including acupuncture, electroacupuncture and herbal medicine.

Chronic Pain Management and Palliative Care
3 Units 30 hours
This course covers management of pain in particular conditions such as malignant tumors, fibromyalgia, chronic rheumatic disorders and autoimmune disorders from the perspective of Oriental Medicine. In addition, contemporary biomedical approaches to tumor pain are presented. Treatment strategies and treatment methods are covered as well as psychosocial factors in treating patients with these conditions.

Psychosocial Factors In Pain Management
3 Units 30 hours
This course examines psychological, sociological, and cultural factors in working with chronic pain patients. Different psychotherapeutic approaches to chronic pain management will include understanding of cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and family systems therapy.

Substance Abuse & Pain Management
3 Units 30 hours
This course introduces students to the basic concepts, history, and theories of addiction and substance abuse, and its clinical application for chronic pain patients and recreational drug users. The course gives an overview of addiction treatment approaches within the modern health care setting, and focuses on protocols utilizing acupuncture and herbal medicine for the management of substance abuse and alcoholism.

Industrial Medicine and Disability Care
3 Units 30 hours
This course covers case management in Industrial Medicine. Specific procedures for Workers Compensation and Personal Injury are covered, as well as disability evaluation.
